Update Net Neutrality and Internet.Org
September 02, 2018
Edit
Internet.org is a Facebook-led initiative with the goal of bringing internet access and the benefits of connectivity to the two-thirds of the world that doesn't have them. The Connectivity Lab at Facebook is developing ways to make affordable internet access possible in communities around the world. It is acquired via high end technology by Aquila Unmanned Arcraft, Connecting with Lasers etc.
But Why People are Worried about it ?
In this Facebook initiative venture the other providers can be take part. That means other tech corps can be provide their service via internet.org with small cost. So that if the data usage for the specific sites will be different compared to the data usage of other sites. (In India Facebook with Reliance Communications)
On a first look its seems very profitable to the users. But in future they can charge their data usage plan and they can take practically huge profit.
Opponents Arguments
- All content available on the internet is equal and all websites must be equally accessible to everyone.
- Once you pay for an internet plan, you should be allowed to access any website you want, without discrimination or restriction.
- No matter which telecom operator is providing you internet services, you should be able to access all date on the internet at the same speed.
In India What Zuckerberg's internet.org (in collaboration with Reliance Communications, which means only Reliance users are eligible) offer is 'free access' only to Facebook with a few partnering platforms, which basically means internet.org is a project to get people on Facebook than provide internet access.
This very restriction of access, letting users use only Facebook and those 50 odd affiliates, is a villain to net neutrality in disguise. It means those companies who pay Reliance communications more will be made available to users who use internet.org and those who choose not to will be inaccessible. Breaking down, internet.org will force telecom operators to lobby against net neutrality.
On a contrary if the participants of internet.org charging more compared to the usage of other services, spontaneously other services will grow. For example if the Facebook charge more for their service other social media will emerge and Facebook will go down. Remember in the world there is no scantiness for Social Websites or other net services.
